Taking A Time Out: Self Care For Caregivers

Posted on March 29, 2016 at 5:24 PM
Taking care of a sick loved one is one of the most difficult challenges one can face in their lives.
Often times coming unexpectedly, care givers must learn how to adjust quickly to a new way of
thinking and living. Though often thought of as an honorable task, care givers often find
themselves stretched beyond their limits putting a crippling stress on not only them but their
personal relationships. How do care givers cope with such a task?

“I’ve started to workout in the mornings before mom wakes up.” When Toni’s mother suffered a
series of strokes last Spring, she, along with her husband has handled caring for her mother full time.
“It was a struggle at first waking up earlier but I needed this time alone to get back to
myself”. Exercising even 2 to 3 times a week has many mental and physical benefits for care
givers. Along with an overall improvement of health, working out is a great way to relieve stress.
There is no need to join your nearest gym, just taking a short walk every morning can help you
relax, improve your mental state and the way you cope with stress that may arrive in the
day.

Another way to cope with stress especially on the go is deep breathing. Taking 4 deep breaths,
inhaling slowly though the nose and exhaling slowly through the mouth can help release any
nervous energy or stress. If you feel your body is tense, take taking a deep breath, tightening
your shoulder muscles, hold for 3 to 5 seconds and exhale slowly while releasing your shoulders
to relax. You can do this for all parts of your body, starting from your feet on up for overall
relaxation.

One of the most effective things care givers can do is find a support group. Though family and
friends are a wonderful support system, sometimes having a group of people who know exactly
what you’re going through is more helpful. Many care givers don’t realize there support groups
online and in person providing a safe space to discuss the ups and downs attached to care giving.
Caregiver.org offers links to online and in person support groups in your area. There are also
Facebook groups as well as groups on meetup.com. How ever you decide to cope with becoming
a care giver, it is imperative to create a self care routine. Taking care of your mental, physical,
and emotional state will improve your overall quality of life in the long run.

The caregivers also need to take care of themselves to be able to provide their patients the comfort that they deserve. They often forget that their well-being should be prioritized too. Their dedication and compassion are surely appreciated by the patients and their families. With this, making time for themselves does not show selfishness, their health is important too and should be looked out for. They do everything that they can to let their patients feel comfortable and well, and their hard work should be recognized by people.

It's important to find some time for yourself. Sometimes it's hard. But I think that's okay.

I agree that caregivers also need a time out from taking care of a sick loved one. When my father-in-law was diagnosed with cancer my mother-in-law became his primary caregiver. They wouldn't think of hiring a full-time nurse or caregiver. The physical and emotional toll on caregivers in unbelievable. My husband and I live close so we would take turns to give her time for herself to re-group. She also found a local community center that offers activities for seniors. There she met fellow seniors she can talk to and go out with from time to time. My father-in-law is now in remission, thanks to his doctors and the loving care of his wife who never left his side during those trying times.

I really do appreciate the roles of caregivers, they always take care of the lives of other people, but they do not somehow get the care they need. I love your blog because it focuses on the side of caregivers. We really need to appreciate them because they are giving huge effort for us. May your blog reach many people to cater more people that will realize the important role of caregivers. Thanks for making me realize their worth, that means so much to me.

When caregivers need someone to be with, it is hard for them to find people that will take care of them. We cannot do anything for them, but they always give their best just to have their patient satisfaction. They may have a hard time with dealing with other people, they know that it is their job and they cannot do anything about it. They are so motivated with their job. I am really proud and happy because there are caregivers in the world.

Caregivers tend to care about others, but forgot to care about themselves. And taking a time out to take care of themselves is a beautiful yet inspiring scenery to see. From all hardships that they faced, they still wanted to pursue this kind of job. And I think others are taking their first priority than themselves. Aside from that, they took care others first than taking care of their own family, because for them it is for their family. Self-care I think is not in their vocabulary because for them work is first and second is their family. Salute for those caregivers who works hard and forgot to take care of themselves.

Care giving is not an easy job, it is tiring and exhausting. They took care of health of others but often forgot about themselves. I really respect and admire those caregivers around the globe, they’re truly exposing toughness and dedication with their work. Their job is indeed physically and emotionally stressful so be good to them. They should relax and took care of their selves too. Some of them have their own family but decided to take care of others as a profession.

I really hate seeing my loved ones suffering from a disease. When I was in junior high school, my father suffered from a heart failure due to a heart attack. Almost 1 year he was bedridden back then. Me and my mother always take care of him. Then one night, he just didn’t breathe, we bring him to the nearest hospital, but the doctor said that my father is dead on arrival. Since then, I am really focused on taking care of my mother and myself. I always make sure that all the things we’ve been using is clean. All the food and drinks that we consume is healthy. Thank you for posting an informative blog like this. I am hoping that I can read a lot of it soon.
